Achievement for all
Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
In science, Earth have been learning all about how fossils are formed. Equipped with only bread and jelly sweets, we had to use our knowledge to create our own fossils. We were able layer the bread and jelly sweets on top of each other and once compacted with a heavy object, we were able to observe the formation over time.
The school council met up today to discuss Children in Need day, we are absolutely delighted that everybody had lots of fun whilst raising money for charity. Well done everybody for raising £216.08 for Children in Need!
As part of Mercury’s R.E topic Hinduism, Year 6 visited a Hindu temple. We looked around the Mandir, admired the powerful Hindu Gods, observed a Hindu prayer - the puja which means adoration and worship - and asked the Pujari lots of interesting questions about the religion. Before we left, all of the children, Miss Bainbridge and Mrs Fullard were given an offering of an apple.
Mercury and some pupils from Saturn had a fantastic Friday afternoon competing in the Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics competition 2021. It was great to see everyone work together: from competing in a range of field and track events; to cheering their team on as spectators; each and every one represented Washingwell wonderfully.
Washingwell came runners up and they all went home with silver medals, and although they didn't make it to the final, they should all be exceptionally proud of themselves! Well done!
Neptune stepped back in time last week on their visit to Lumley Estate. We worked with the fantastic 'Out There Adventures' and were transported back to the Stone Age. The children had a fantastic day and got a real taste of what it might have been like to live during this time. They took part in archery, fire lighting, tasted food cooked in an underground oven, built mud walls, studied artefacts and learnt how track and hunt; just to name a few! A brilliant day had by all and an enriching learning experience.
Over the last few weeks, Mars have had a great time in Forest School. We have played games, made magic wands, explored using the slackline and had many delicious treats around the campfire.
Venus have been sharing 'One Kind Word' as part of their learning during Anti-bullying Week. We wanted to share them with you and hope you will pass them on.
On Wednesday, Earth went to the Great North Museum in Newcastle.
We enjoyed exploring the Ancient Egyptian section, looking at artefacts and real life Mummies! We also enjoyed recreating an Ancient Egyptian’s ‘Journey to the Afterlife’.
In the afternoon, we enjoyed learning about Fossils, particularly about the dinosaurs! We were gobsmacked at how big the T-Rex fossil was and enjoyed listening to lots of facts about how the fossil was discovered. We also had a look at the rocks and minerals section, which included lots of rocks from around the world!
Raising money, dressing up and having fun to support Children in Need.
Last week Jupiter class enjoyed getting to experience their first trip. They visited the Life Centre and took part in the workshop "Where on Earth?" going on an adventure around the earth travelling from night to day, discovering oceans and continents. They helped the animals find their right homes in the hot, cold, dry, and wet places. They also had lots of fun exploring the different zones in the Life Centre.
