  • Diaries and Division

    Fri 27 Nov 2020

This week, Saturn have completed diary entries for the day Britain went to war. We read Flossie Albright’s diary entry and listened to Neville Chamberlain’s Speech. There was a great deal of discussion about how the children would be feeling.

In Maths, we have been learning a different method for division. Over the week, we have developed our understanding and completed some problem solving tasks. Some of us used division to work out how many days different sized boxes of Weetabix would last in Mrs McCue’s house.

  • Taste of United Kingdom

    Fri 27 Nov 2020

Jupiter are learning all about ‘Where do I live?’ in our Geography lessons. We started by learning the names of the countries that are in the United Kingdom and this week we had a taste of a food linked to each of them. We had scones from England, soda bread from Northern Ireland, welsh cakes from Wales and shortbread from Scotland. We had to record which country the food came from and write if we liked it or not! I wonder if you can tell if it was a yes or a no from our faces?

  • History detectives

    Thu 26 Nov 2020

Mercury have enjoyed gathering information about the lives of the Windrush generation, after they moved to the UK. We examined different sources then decided where they had come from and what they taught us. We were quite shocked by some of the content, and the abuse which these people suffered due to ignorance and prejudice. We also learnt about the childhood of Floella Benjamin while reading our class text, and how she learnt to overcome these atrocities to succeed in life.

  • Tree Champions

    Thu 26 Nov 2020

Neptune have been using their sessions in the woods to complete the tree champion challenge. We started by looking at and identifying different trees by their physical features and have been using this to design a tree champion. We had to think about how our tree champion would represent other trees by being their voice. We look forward to sharing our designs with you.

  • Types of Houses

    Fri 20 Nov 2020

In forest school, children in Venus had great fun working in groups to design and build a home for a fairy, elf or sprite. It was lovely to see everyone working together so well and Mr Glaister was very impressed with their creations!

During geography lessons this week, the children have been learning about different types of houses. They have learned about detached houses, semi-detached houses, terraced houses, flats, cottages and bungalows. To help them remember the names, they played a game which required them to freeze and hold a particular pose when the name of a house type was called out.

  • Time Capsule

    Fri 13 Nov 2020

Gateshead Council and the Friends of Chase Park have invited local schools to take in the final action of the Heritage Lottery funded project that has breathed new life in to the park over the last six years. Class Venus have been busy gathering ideas of items that they would like to include in Washingwell’s very own school time capsule, and today, they have put it all together ready for collection. The capsules are going to be buried in Chase Park on Monday, for a period of 30 years and will be opened by Whickham residents in the Year 2050. A short video of the time capsules being buried will be posted via the Friends of Chase Park social media streams. We look forward to watching.
